Bob Shane came out right after high school with other friends. After graduating he answered and ad for models in the Village Voice only to find out it was a call-boy service for "body painting" but painting was never really involved.
After meeting Roy Garret in a gym where they both worked out, they struck up a relationship. Roy was already doing porn work and immediately warned Bob about it. He let Bob become involved in filming with him in part to let him know that the relationships on the film set would not be a threat to their partnership. Shane ended up working on both sides of the camera.

Roy [Garrett] is not only not a loner, he is seldom seen without his soulful companion on the highway of life – Bob Shane. Seated apart from one another in a social situation, they slowly gravitate toward one another, as though their pockets were stuffed with magnets. Roy and Bob met at a NYC gym in 1981, just before the filming of Joe Gage's Heatstroke began. Roy was the star of that film, and Bob was given a non-sexual role. After Heatstroke, Roy and Bob began living together, and in the remainder of their porn film careers (five films) neither one performed in any scene without the other. They retired from porn films in 1983.
They lived together for six years, until Bob's death in 1987. Roy died in 1992.
