Halsted claimed to have been raised a Doukhobor. His father moved out when he was three. Halsted left at age 15. Studied botany at L.A. State and was engaged but broke it off. He moved to Hollywood to "find myself a faggot" and took up with a guy 10 years senior for 3 years.
Halsted met his lover, Joseph Yale (for whom he claims to have coined the word twinkie), in front of a Hollywood leather bar in 1969. Together they started working on his first film L.A. Plays Itself, which took 3 years to finish in 1972. They were together, except for 3 years after 1972, until Yale succumbed to AIDS in 1986. Within 2 years, a despondent Halsted left a note and overdosed himself on sleeping pills: "I had a good life... I've had looks, a body, money, success and artistic triumphs. I've had the love of my life. I see no reason to go on."
Halsted was the 'sensitive type', a liberated "fag-ass faggot", an avid gardener, a dabbler in Zen, mysticism and astrology but into being a sadist and into outrageousness in general. An enigma to many interviewers.
His interview with Paul Alcuin is brimming with bluster, bravado and metaphysics. He claimed that orgasm was not his reason for sex but rather the psychology of it. While he practiced sadism on his tricks, he felt that he was leading them on to a greater understanding of themselves but that 80% of them couldn't get it.
Halsted owned a bar in Los Angeles where A Night at Halsted's was filmed. He also did some stage (News for Tennessee, with Joey), film work (Scoring, aka Dribble) and printed a periodical in 1976 called Package.
Director Steve Scott described him as having "so much magnetism it leaped off the screen and knocked you out of your seat."
