The first of the Trucking Trilogy, conceived and directed by Joe Gage, "Kansas City Trucking Co." (1976) set a host of standards for gay fuck films which have been copied, imitated, but never improved upon, over the ensuing quarter century. The trilogy follows the work and sex life of Richard Locke across the country, proceeding to the "El Paso Wrecking Corp." before ending up in Los Angeles for the inestimable finale of the series, "L.A. Tool & Die," which is in a league of its own and demands a separate review.
The modus operandus in all three flicks, however, is approximately the same: The soundtrack is almost always traditional or contemporary country music -- it's constant; there are only one or two sustained, start-to-finish sex scenes in each movie -- most of them are edited into the context of the narrative or to complement another sex scene; and all of the men are real -- bears, hunks, studs -- whatever you want to call them, they appear, act, suck and fuck like straight American macho dudes. It is the latter feature of each movie which is so exceptionally exciting as to have qualified the trilogy as an instant classic, and which helps it maintain its hold on our sexual appetites to this day.
Locke, a tall, lanky, defined, bearded bear -- with an appetite for cock that just won't quit -- is picking up a new kid to train as a tractor-trailer driver on their way across country. He stops into headquarters to greet the dispatcher, the great blond cock-hound Jack Wrangler, and we are simultaneously introduced to Steven Boyd, the trainee, who is showering in the apartment he shares with his "old lady." "Kansas City Trucking Co." is more than a porn flick, more than a great gay film -- it is a pioneering example of porn as art. Gage created a furor -- most of it highly favorable -- with this one flick and it sure as hell set the standard for others, such as Titan Studios, to follow.
