As the second part of the movie opens, glamorous couple Ray Star and Savanna Samson are having a press conference, with reporter Michael Lucas on his cellphone through most of it. This is done with total care, but as Lucas and Dimarco have wisely not chosen to do a paint-by-numbers rehashing of a film that can't be remade, this sideline from their story seems like a bit of pandering. Unfortunately, the evening ends on a low note as a furious Ray smacks Michael in front of the paparazzi (a word coined by Fellini in his masterpiece) for squiring around his lady. So ends another adventure for the emotionally starving Michael.
However, there is another party to attend, and this time Cole goes with Michael. "Why do they always look like unhappy rabbits?" Cole opines as Michael hopes to get Cole a publisher for his own work. The party is thrown by a true friend of Michael's, Spencer Quest, who actually has the first real words of advice for Michael before trotting over to very youthful brunet Jamie Donovan. An enormous anonymous orgy is happening all around as the denizens grab for Michael, but he walks by them without paying much attention. He finally settles on a room where he pulls out his cock and decides brunet Justin Christopher is his man. Before I forget, I have to note everyone's wonderful acting. This is a gigantic undertaking and since it is so plot-heavy, it requires porn models who can act. Aces like Spencer Quest and Ray Star help immeasurably in that department, but it's Michael Lucas himself who gives the best performance. This role is ideally suited to his casual yet icy persona, the eternal outsider with dozens of keys inside if he would only learn how to use them properly. At all times, he's acutely aware of the script, rather than his image (though often they are allowed to melt together), and he is sensational.
As the movie churns and the themes fly, as the writing reaches fever pitches and as the movie tries to stay true to its source material (at least the idea of it, for following Fellini's plot would be madness), what about the sex? After all, this isn't a remake of the 1960 film, but a porn inspiration of it. The sex always fits. That's a superlative compliment. There is no place in this script for sweet adoring sex. It's all angsty, all hectic, all momentary. Luckily, directors Lucas and Dimarco have made sure all of the models understand that, so the sex is forever churning at top speed, making sure never to get too moody, but just staying frivolous and nearly always emotionally anonymous. The three-way for Michael, Jason and Derrick in the first half is the movie's best sex scene, a creative breathtaking ride, but there simply are no duds here because everyone is knowledgeable about how the sex should be created.
"La Dolce Vita" aims as high as possible, and Michael Lucas and his team have put such precise care into the making of this movie and such a stamp on it that it resonates with vision and clarity, not to mention the outrageous perfection it clearly wants from the first glossy frame.
