"All I Have To Do Is Dream ... Dream ... Dream ..." -- Everly Brothers: In the late fifties and the early sixties the Everly Brothers sang beguilingly of adolescent romance in crisp, shimmering voices on such timeless favorites as "Bye Bye Love," "Wake Up Little Susie," and "All I Have To Do Is Dream."
Like the rock and roll of that time, Jerry Douglas' latest film is of that same era and recounts the adventures of a young and horny basketball team as they discover their true sexual identities. The romance is adolescent ("suck me first ... and then I'll suck you") and the guys' cocks and balls are in fact shimmering.
"Dream Team" begins with the five-year class reunion and a story is told in a series of flashbacks to their senior year back in 1957. This is more like a movie than a DVD with meticulous detail given to the script, the acting (really), the setting, the casting and especially the sex. All of the guys look and act their parts very convincingly. The sex scenes often begin innocently enough (flipping through girlie magazines ... taking a shower after a game ... post-sock hop necking, etc.), but the cocksucking and ass fucking is anything but.
Rick Chase and Kurt Young come across as the teen idol types, Tony Donovan and Kristian Brooks are all-American jocks who just happen to enjoy sucking each other's cocks and Scott Lyons is the quintessential rebel-without-a-cause bad-ass with greasy blond hair and "I'm not gay" attitude -- loved him! Soon enough, however, Rick Chase's gorgeous cock is in his mouth. In one of the hottest sequences, Chase takes Lyons' monster cock on the roof of a convertible ("convertible" ... get it?).
Newcomer Aaron Lawrence is cast as Howie the ultimate wire-rim-eyeglass-wearing Catholic nerd. Good golly Miss Molly, the nerd has his revenge and fucks the blue suede shoes off of pretty boy Chase in a wet and steamy locker room scene towards the end.
"Dream Team" is an excellent period piece that delves into the delight of budding adolescent gay sexuality. And Rick Chase, as always, is just dreamy!
A DVD Review by Butch Harris
The age-old debate - well, okay, ever since porn has been invented - has been whether or not a story was necessary to a porn flick. Some say that most people don't sit and watch these films for the story line. Or do they?
That's the argument.
Jerry Douglas is a man after my own heart. I'm of the belief that a story can only add to a film's excitement. Giving a story characters and a plot line makes it more real to me. After all, every person who pops that video in a VCR and presses the "Play" button has a story. Some personal stories are amazing, some not. But everyone has one, from a nerdy professor to a cowboy to an accountant to a high school basketball team.
What Douglas does with Dream Team is amazing. I had heard that this film had "too much plot" for a porn film. I agree that it's heavy with it, probably the most complex story he's told so far, with eight main characters and a screenplay that has them bouncing back and forth from 1957 to 1962. But he stays faithful to every word and every moment.
The story centers on the five-year reunion of a high school basketball team who, five years earlier, finally won a game after an eleven-year losing streak. The main character is the gorgeous (and there is really no other word to describe this man) Rick Chase, an openly gay television actor. Chase has come back to rekindle a relationship with his best friend, Aaron Lawrence, who has become a confused reverend and a gay crusader. Lawrence had a major crush on Chase in high school, but Chase was of the belief that you don't fool around with your best friend.
Scott Lyons is Chase's straight high school drinking buddy who can't do anything without a beer in his hand - even fuck. In an electrifying scene early in the film, Chase and Lyons experiment with each other through a sensual, mutual seduction that quickly turns into an erotic moment of self-discovery for both boys. They begin with the hesitant blowjobs back in '57 and, when reunited, for old times sake, pick up where they left off as Chase bends over so that Lyons can nail that pretty butt.
Kurt Young is a frustrated, married realtor who is the most sexually active of the group, screwing half the population - be it male or female. Tony Donovan is a husband and father who has never left his small town, never even left his old home, to pursue his own dreams. He lives his fantasies in a basement room that is plastered floor-to-ceiling with naked pictures of women. But he also has a major thing for Young. In one of the best scenes in the film, back in 1957 in the secret room, Young tells of a man-to-man experience he once had that intrigues Donovan, and they decide to service each other. Donovan reveals a glory hole in the room, and that's how they begin. Young, however, blows and runs. Frustrated, Donovan pulls aside a mirror, and we see a picture of Young with the mouth cut out and another glory hole. That's how Donovan releases his load. Flash to '62 and we are back in the basement the boys start to suck each other. But Donovan is still so terrified of his sexuality that he's not comfortable unless they are blindfolded. Once that is done, Donovan turns into a sexual dynamo and rapes Young with that huge, monster cock. It is a terrific scene because Donovan is not only releasing his anger (Young has been shtupping his wife, too, it seems) but it's with desperation as well, because he knows that he will still never leave this pathetic little town.
Kristian Brooks and Lucas James are secret high school lovers who have been together for two years. They invite Lawrence over because Lawrence wants to learn how to dance. The son of a religious zealot, Lawrence is a shy young man also terrified of what his body is putting him through yet relents to Brooks and James seducing him after he's had a few drinks. Douglas throws some amazing images in this scene: A '50s stag film plays on the guys' chests and the great daisy-chain fucks where each guy takes turns being the middleman. After Lawrence cums, he realizes that he is a third wheel and leaves. The two lovers remain, taking turns fucking each other and vowing to find a place where they'll be accepted in society.
At the end of the school year, Coach Preston Richie decides that he's run out of options for winning a game and locks the seven players in the locker room to find "enlightenment." Of course, what we get is a terrific seven-man circle jerk with some unbelievably hot kissing action. This is the bond that brings the boys together to win that game.
The final scene finally brings our lovers, Chase and Lawrence, together. A scene that took five years to complete. They make love in the school locker room. The actor and the reverend pledge their love and lust for one another in a terrifically sensual love scene.
This is truly one of the best films I have ever seen.
Studio 2000 is known for its story-oriented films and should be highly commended for allowing Douglas the opportunity to build this gem. It has been rumored that Douglas takes years to finish a script, but with results like Flesh & Blood and Family Values , the result is well worth the wait. Andrew Rosen's magical editing transports us through time and back again with ease, and the vintage cars and clothing add a great sense of nostalgia. The actors do a great job with the amount of dialogue and sex that are thrown at them,, and they pull it off with great effort - we're not talking a lot of Oliviers her but definitely credible performances, particularly Young, which is no surprise. Donovan is absolutely terrific; Lawrence is both poignant and sad; and Chase carries the film effortlessly. Brooks and James show great passion for each other and Lyons is a tragic hero.
But the real winner here is Douglas. He proves that you don't have to staple a porn film together with a condom and a jockstrap in order to make it titillating and exciting. He makes you care for these characters and root for them and feel for them.
After all, that's how we'd like our own stories perceived.
Isn't it?
