According to an interview with Stallion magazine. Joe Gage met West in a bar and offered him a role in Heatstroke. It was originally supposed to be a faceless j/o role but expanded to the character role of Lucky. The film was already in production but the role of Lucky had not been cast. West attended the opening day at the Adonis Theatre in New York with Casey Donovan, Clinton Coe and Divine. Richard found the resulting production more impressive than he expected and felt more comfortable to continue working with Gage. West described himself as homosexual but occasionally enjoyed partaking in women. In 2008, in a reply to a blog questioner, Joe Gage said "After Richard West appeared in Heatstroke, I wrote Django specifically for him. He subsequently died and I didn’t want to make it without him." Django was mentioned in the closing credits of Heatstroke as 'coming soon'. On the other hand in 1992, Gage said that a bloating budget and lack of funding was the reason it had not been done.
