Roy traced his porn career to a fascination with adult material at a very young age. He dropped out of high school and tried bartending at a go-go girl bar. He advertised in the Village Voice for an apartment share and got lots of crank calls. He took up one guy who took him out to the Anvil on his first gay excursion and informed Roy that he could make money getting blow jobs. Then after much vacillation Roy applied to be a dancer but didn't enjoy that work too much. Roy met his long term lover Bob Shane at a gym where they both worked out. Roy told Bob about his film work right away and it didn't bother Bob. Roy invited Bob to work with him in front of the camera partly to show Bob that relationships on a set would not be a threat to their relationship. Roy visualized the two of them on the cover of People Magazine with the headline of "Porn's Happiest Couple." In Roy's first film Men Come First, he couldn't get up or off, hated the mood on the set and actually had little sexual experience at that point. His first films were for Francis Ellie who he thought led a confused set. When Joe Gage called on him, he started to enjoy the work. After ending his film work he wrote a well received one-man show of his poetry called Hot Rod to Hell. ------ If Roy Garrett's screen persona is that of a sullen, brooding, isolated young man, the off screen Garrett is quite the polar opposite: soft-spoken, easy-to-be-with, possessing a dazzling, explosive smile. Roy is not only not a loner, he is seldom seen without his soulful companion on the highway of life – Bob Shane. Seated apart from one another in a social situation, they slowly gravitate toward one another, as though their pockets were stuffed with magnets. It actually seems painful for one to be without the other – Shane's mesmerizing blue eyes stay fixed on Roy, and Garrett's dark, burning gaze is inevitably aimed directly at Bob. Stallion, October 1982. ------ Notes from Madd Dogg: Roy and Bob met at a NYC gym in 1981, just before the filming of Joe Gage's Heatstroke began. Roy was the star of that film, and Bob was given a non-sexual role. After Heatstroke, Roy and Bob began living together, and in the remainder of their porn film careers (five films) neither one performed in any scene without the other. They retired from porn films in 1983. |
