John Hospers (June 9, 1918 – June 12, 2011) was an American philosopher and political activist who was the first openly Gay Man to run for President of the US when he ran as the Libertarian Party Candidate in 1972. Hospers wrote a steamy Gay Romance Novel called "The Long Search" that was published by Vantage Press in 1971. Hospers used a pseudonym of Avery Heath when he wrote the novel. Hospers was friends with Bob Mizer and had a habit of bringing new models to Mizer when he visited. Mizer showed up one day with a model named "David". As a joke Mizer and Hospers decided to give David the stage name "Avery Heath".
