See Boy in the Sand: Casey Donovan, All-American Sex Star by Roger Edmonson; 1998 Alyson Books. Edmonson's biography describes him as a gentleman who was always well dressed, always upbeat, able to ingratiate himself with anybody, anywhere in the world, a well educated devotee of culture and the arts, a sexual virtuoso, extremely promiscuous, unappologetically gay and the first gay porn star. He had wanted to have a legit career and did appear in some off broadway productions but this was aborted by the porn films and hustling he did to make ends meet and his unwillingness to hide his sexuality. Some of his co-actors said his acting was OK but unvarying from performance to performance. A note in Mandate in 1979 said that he had bought a guest house in Key West that he called Casa Donovan. Michael Kearns says that Casey was the highest paid hustler in NYC at the time Donovan performed in Tubstrip in 1974 but an appointment with actor Tom Tyron led to a romantic affair. For most of his career Casey had no tattoo but towards the end he had a small one on his hip that his S/M master placed there. Appeared in non-porn films: Score (1972), Ginger (1971), Dragula (1971), play: Circle in Water. |
