Sonny was discovered by Walter Kundzicz of Champion Studio. I have very little doubt that the Champion pix were the major reason for Sonny's subsequent career in entertainment. After modeling for Champion for a few photo shoots (post hoc ergo propter hoc) Sonny became a protégé of astrologist Carroll Righter. Hmmm . . . It was around the dawning of the Age of Aquarius. This was in L.A. Sonny then became a stunt man in legit films, while at the same time appearing in quite a few straight porn films. This was in the mid seventies.
At about the same time, Sonny appeared anonymously as the Horoscope man in the January 1974 issue of Playgirl. He later had a featured part as the Indian in the legit film 48 Hrs. (1982). He was a construction worker with the hots for Dominique Dunne in Poltergeist (1982). And he had a small part in Predator (1987)--the only part of Sonny's that could be called small. I notice that Predator featured two future governors (Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura) and a candidate for governor (Sonny, who unsuccessfully ran for governor of Kentucky in 2003). Don't know of any other film with that distinction.
In the nineties, Sonny spent two and a half years in federal prison on a harassing phone call charge (involving his ex-wife). A phone call. Two and a half YEARS. He was released after the federal Court of Appeals found that even if he did what he was charged with doing (and they had their doubts), it would not be a crime.
Sonny abandoned his adult entertainment pursuits a couple decades ago. And I have no doubt that he was (and is) straight. Other than the nudie pix for Champion in the sixties, I know of no gay porn done by him.
