Fred Halsted's classic odyssey of Los Angeles men, has been hailed by critics around the globe as a watershed film in the history of gay erotic cinema. Both "L.A. Plays Itself" and the additional short film "Sex Garage" have been chosen for the permanent film collection of The Museum of Modern Art.

Described by Harold Fairbanks, Advocate film reviewer , as the first really artistic gay porn film. Halsted says that he saw no gay porn prior to filming this. It was bought for and shown at the Museum of Modern Art. Yale pulled out of the film in the middle so Halsted had to rewrite the story with the footage he had.
Zephyr: Three songs by Tonto's Expanding Head Band are also heard in the seminal L.A. Plays Itself by Fred Halsted: Cybernaut, Jetsex and Timewhys, all in the second part with Fred and Joey. Earlier in thim film, in the first half is Symphony in B Flat Major, Hob. 1:98:2 Adagio by Haydn, Leonard Bernstein and the N.Y. Philharmonic.
